A man who defrauded the LCBO was recently handed down jail sentnce and ordered to pay $1.4 million in restitution. Apparently the LCBO is also seeking $2 million in civil damages.
Many are saying this sort of thing is endemic to a centralized system of alcohol distribution. I would say the zeal with which the LCBO is pursuing Mr. Agostini shows that this isn’t exactly regular practice and the judge took notice of the complexity of the scheme used to defraud the LCBO of both money and premium spirits.
It doesn’t appear that any craft beer was pilfered in the scheme which is something. I’m not sure whether to be grateful that more precious one-offs didn’t walk out the door or whether to be offended by the lack of recognition.
